Southport, Conn. — The passenger on a two-person motorcycle ride died early this morning as a result of injuries sustained from an accident last night on Bronson Road.
At 8:48 p.m. on Sunday night the Fairfield Emergency Communications Center received a call reporting that a motorcycle carrying two riders had struck a tree on Bronson Road. Fire, Police and American Medical Response units were dispatched, and Engine 4 arrived at 999 Bronson Road near Cider Mill Lane to find a motorcycle "up against a tree," according to Assistant Chief Doug Chavenello. "The driver was on the ground under the motorcycle and the passenger was further into the woods."
Car 3, Rescue 1, Ladder 2 and Squad 14 arrived shortly after Engine 4 and began patient treatment. Upon finding the driver alert and complaining of lower back pain with the passenger unconscious and having difficulty breathing, A/C Chavenello "had all available personnel assist AMR with treating the passenger and removing her from the woods" while Fire Department personnel monitored the driver until the arrival shortly thereafter of the second ambulance from AMR. The woman, in her mid-30s, whose name has not been released, suffered multiple injuries internally and externally, according to police. The passenger was wearing more protective gear than most individuals wear when riding a motorcycle, which included a helmet and a chest protector, according to Deputy Police Chief Gary MacNamara.
One fire fighter was sent in the first ambulance to aid AMR in patient care en route to St. Vincent's Hospital, while remaining fire personnel assisted AMR in transfer of the driver to a stretcher for transport to Bridgeport Hospital, secured remaining hazards and assisted police with lighting during their investigation. Car 3 and Ladder 2 cleared the scene shortly before 9:30 p.m., while Engine 4, Rescue 1 and Squad 14 remained on scene for until 9:48 p.m.; the police investigation remains ongoing at this time, according to Sergeant Jim Perez of the Fairfield Police Department, but the roadway may have been wet due to rain earlier in the day.
An autopsy will be performed Tuesday morning. |
